Here is a quick video about the eruption made by [Zone 22] on yooutube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KkRwefwns0
On April 10th, 1815 Tambora gave out a massive explosion. People 1,600 miles away could hear the dreadful sound of Tambora's eruption. It killed 92,000 people (mainly of starvation). Mount Tambora is known as "Pompeii Indonesia". Tambora is a lava dome volcano. A lava dome is when thick lava creates oddly shaped mounds that increases when lava piles on top one another. The latest eruption was in the year of 1967. It was said to be the largest known eruption in historic times. If you look closely on the map, you can actually see Mount Tambora's crater.

The eruption of Mount Tambora was listed 7 on the VEI scale. No other volcano reached more that 7. Mount Tambora's eruption was the power fullest in the last 10 thousand years. The erruption cleared out 50 - 150 cubic km of magma and mesures 7 on the VEI scale. After the explosion large tsunamis with a wave hight of 10 might have occured. Background Info:
Facts: Did You Know That... • Mount Tambora is on the edge of Ring of Fire? • Mount Tambora is located on an island? • Mount Tambora's erruption was the deadliest in the last 10 thousand years. • Mount Tambora is more than 3,600 feet deep? • Mount Tambora was created by the Eurasian Plate and the Australian Plate? History: It last erupted in 1967 and erupts twice every 1000 years Hazards and Risks:
•VERTICAL PLUME (can affect jet aircraft) •ASH AND TEPHRA •LATERAL BLAST •PYROCLASTIC CLOUDS, BURSTS, AND FLOWS -LAND SLIDES - About 10, 000 people dies every major eruption and the minor eruption aren't very effective |
- Classification
Frequency: Major Eruptions Eruptions in Between 1815 CE -1880 and 1967 790 CE The average eruption occurs every 1900 years 3050 BCE or 2 every 1000 years 3910 BCE What caused the eruption of Mt. Tambora?
A large magma chamber is under the mountain and after several decades it filled up and finally in 1815 volcanic activity reached historic climax in the eruption.
Conclusion:
My prediction of the future of Mt. Tambora is that there will most likely be a few major eruptions like the one is 1815 and this time it will cause more damage and kill a lot more people because the population then would increase by a lot. |
